What is a bloke’s midlife crisis?

A male midlife crisis is a real phenomenon characterised by a period of psychological and emotional turmoil typically occurring in middle age, often around the age of 40-60. This casts images of a man with a receding hairline buying a flashy new sports car in the hope of impressing a trophy mate.

But there is more to it. It often involves a reassessment of life goals, and achievements, and a deep sense of introspection. Men experiencing a midlife crisis may grapple with feelings of discontent, frustration, and a desire for significant life changes.

Common triggers include concerns about mortality, unmet aspirations, and the realisation that time is finite. This crisis can manifest in impulsive behavior, such as drastic career changes, relationship shifts, or the pursuit of new hobbies.

While not everyone goes through a midlife crisis, it represents a psychological and emotional phase where individuals seek meaning and purpose, often prompted by the recognition of life's impermanence and the need for personal fulfillment.

Perhaps the term midlife crisis is a bit drastic and midlife transition is more fitting. It can be an opportunity to make changes in your life, especially if you are in a financial position to do so.

The key is to think through any groundbreaking decisions and think of the long-term impacts that won’t just involve you but your family and friends also.
